Karen Collins, a longtime Sugar Creek
employee, has identified
things you can tackle in your garden this month:
-
Aphids are getting active and like the new growth on
roses. If new growth isn't deep purple, apply Espoma
Epsom Plus. Feed with a rose fertilizer such as Bayer
Rose and Flower Care, Bayer's All in One Rose and Flower
Care, or Espoma Rose Tone. Follow directions for
application. Repeat application throughout the season.
-
Pinch faded azaleas and rhododendron blossoms. Double
flowered azaleas need no pinching. After bloom,
fertilize azaleas with Espoma Holly-Tone or Miracle-Gro
Water Soluble Azalea, Camellia, Rhododendron Plant Food.
-
Summer bulbs such as caladiums, dahlias, cannas, and
elephant ears may be planted at this time.
-
Don't
over-fertilize marigolds and impatiens. Poor flowering
will occur and stretching of foliage will result,
especially impatiens.
-
Next year's spring bulb flower production will decline
if you remove foliage too early.
-
Begin planting all your old favorite warm-season
annuals. Be sure to drop by -- we have hundreds of new,
exceptional and rare annuals, shrubs, perennials and
tropicals.
-
Herbs planted in average soils need no extra fertilizer.
Too much fertilizer may reduce flavor and pungency.
-
Houseplants may be taken outdoors when night temps
remain above 50 degrees. Most houseplants prefer only
direct morning sun.
-
Isn't the sound of spring a blessing? Be sure to
provide good nesting habitats within your gardens for
birds. And remember, birds eat many insect pests. Sugar
Creek has a wonderful selection of birdbaths and unique
bird houses available for our bird friends.
