WELCOME to another year at Sugar Creek Gardens. This year brings more outstanding, different and just plain fun perennials than ever before. Plants causing a sensation are:
PLANT PROFESSIONALS ASTONISHED! Seminar room filled with gasps of awe
‘Henry Eilers' Sweet Coneflower, Rudbeckia subtomentosa. You know you have something extra special when hardened plant people are stunned. At a recent professional horticulture seminar, when an image of ‘Henry Eilers’ Sweet Coneflower was flashed on the screen, the ohs and ahs filled the auditorium. What has these experts amazed are the matchless, fine, quilled lemon yellow petals. Other wonderful attributes include its graceful 4-5’stalks and sweet, light vanilla scented leaves. It makes a captivating display with grasses, Joe-Pye Weeds and other prairie natives, and is lovely in the vase.
A RARE FIRST 'Candy Mountain' Foxglove, Digitalis
'Candy Mountain' is the first Foxglove to have upward-facing flowers instead of the usual downward-facing ones. Now viewers can easily see the beautifully speckled throats of these rose pink blossoms. They are produced on very strong, strictly upright, 3-4’ stems in summer.
BREEDING BREAKTHROUGH 8 years of work produce gargantuan flowers
‘Full Moon’ Coreopsis is an outstanding creation from the ‘Big Bang’ breeding program of Darrel Probst. The intensive breeding work involved eight different species of Coreopsis. His hard work has rewarded us with the largest Coreopsis flower ever, huge canary yellow flowers that measure a whopping 3” across. ‘Full Moon’ is easy to grow, disease free, and very long blooming from summer into fall.
Choice selection by one of the most respected plantmen in the world
‘Misty Lace’ Goat’s Beard, Aruncus. This seedling was selected by Dr. Allan Armitage of the University of Georgia for its many outstanding qualities. Large, creamy white, feathery flower panicles are produced on dark red stems atop compact mounds of ferny foliage. Grows 18-24” and prefers part shade. Vigorous and easy.
Reward yourself with armloads of bouquets
'Mauve Majesty’ Peruvian Lily, Alstroemeria. From the breeding program of Dr. Mark Bridgen of Cornell University comes this hardy pink lily. Bright mauve pink flowers with rich dark speckling and a creamy yellow throat are produced atop neat, upright plants in summer. They make excellent cut flowers, lasting up to 2 weeks in a vase. Grows 30” tall, sun to part shade.
'Parsley’ Male Fern, Dryopteris filix-mas. A unique and eye-catching fern with dark green, crinkled and crested foliage that resembles parsley. This is a vigorous variety that matures quickly compared to other ferns. It’s great for mass plantings, though it will stay in a clump, or combine it with Lungworts or Japanese Forest Grass in the shade garden. Once established, it can tolerate moderate drought.
The most sought after Iris ‘Before the Storm’ Bearded Iris. Dark, deep purple, almost black flowers top tall 37” stalks. Exceptional blossoms and form earned this beauty the Dykes Medal, the highest honor a German Iris can receive. Darkest variety.
Intricately beautiful petals as pretty as the finest painted porcelain ‘Swirlin’ Skirts’ Lenten Rose, Helleborus. An exquisitely beautiful new selection with double white flowers. Outer petals are white flushed with lime green down the center. Pure white inner petals are heavily ruffled with purple markings at the base of each petal. A cluster of lime green stamens are present at the center of each flower. ‘Swirlin’ Skirts’ is a robust grower, forming a full, healthy clump of deep green, glossy foliage in the landscape. Prefers shade to part shade. 2008 Hosta of the Year
'BLUE MOUSE EARS'
Voted
the 2008 Hosta of the Year by the American Hosta Growers.
An adorable small Hosta with thick, almost rubbery, round, deep blue
leaves. Forms a perfectly symmetrical mound 8" tall and 12"
wide. Clusters of lavender, bell-shaped flowers are produced on
12" scapes in midsummer. Light to full shade.
Princess Trumpet Flower, or Hardy Gloxinia, Incarvillea olgae. This hardy Gloxinia produces loads of huge pink bells on 3’ tall plants. The lovely trumpets continue to grace the garden from spring until late summer. Very easy to grow and prefers sun to part shade. It thrives in dry, poor soils, and in addition to being unusual and beautiful, it is also very hardy.
Tall, Dark and Handsome Cantonese Fairy Bells, Disporum ‘Night Heron.’ Striking, dark purple bamboo-like stems unfurl to reveal golden-tan papery bracts at each node. White flowers are followed by masses of shiny black berries. Makes a stunning 4-5’ tall evergreen clump. Perfect back drop for other shade perennials, or where a bamboo or ornamental grass look is desired.
