Pork and Beans Sedum

If you have a rock  garden, love Hens and Chicks, or simply want to try something new and unusual in your containers this summer, consider

Echeveria x nodolusa and Echeveria x rosea.

Echeverias are native to South America and Mexico, so they like it hot and dry, but require well-drained soil.  They'll even tolerate light shade.  The nodulosa variety is a green, compact succulent outlined in red -- very showy.  The rosea cultivar features a striking pink flower.  We treat them as annuals here.

And we've got a variety of perennial Stonecrop including Sedum makinoi 'Ogon,' which is a mass of tiny, bright gold leaves that form a dense mat only 2 inches high -- it will stop traffic in your garden!  It could use protection from hot afternoon sun and will overwinter in St. Louis with a little protection.  This plant is great for any dry nooks and crannies, or for use in containers.

Mix up your planting palette with Sedum reflexum 'Blue Spruce,’ a silver-blue stonecrop that looks like a bunch of tiny little evergreen trees 6-8 inches tall.  It's very hardy in St. Louis.

And for the fun of it, try Sedum rubrotinctum, Pork and Beans Stonecrop -- yes, Pork and Beans! These jelly-bean shaped leaves are on leaning 6 to 8-inch stems. The red-brown tips turn bronze in the sun, hence the name.
