GAILLARDIA,
Blanket
Flower. Easy to grow plants that prefer
poorer soils. Heat tolerant
and drought tolerant once established. Their name Blanket Flower refers to
the manner in which they used to blanket North American prairies with their
blooms. Natives can still be seen in Midwest prairies into the Rockies.
Many bloom prolifically from June until a hard frost.
‘Amber Wheels.’
Selected for its unique blossoms; large, golden
yellow flowers with fringed petals and prominent amber-red center. They are
produced on tall stems above the mounded, lance shaped leaves all summer
long and into fall. Reaches 28 - 32 inches tall.

'Fanfare.’
From England comes one of the most talked about
new plants! Deep scarlet trumpet flowers, topped by bright yellow ends,

flower heads to encourage this hot color performer to keep going throughout

flowers above attractive whorled green leaves. The leaves have a fragrance
of newly-mown hay and are used to make May wine. Galium is very attractive
beneath shrubs or in a naturalized area.

Apple
Blossom Grass. Sun; blooms June-October; drought
tolerant; long flowering.
‘Passionate Blush.’ Striking variegated foliage

even before blooming. New growth that is rosy returns transforms into green

GAULTHERIA procumbens,
Wintergreen, Checkerberry. This creeping shrublet
only grows to 6” in height. Foliage has a strong wintergreen scent. White
flowers mature into scarlet fruit which can stay one the plant until next
spring. Can take full sun if consistently moist.
GAZANIA,
Cold
Hardy Gazania. Sun; tolerant of drought once
established.
linearis ‘Colorado Gold.’ Glossy mounds of deep
green, strap-shaped leaves are spangled with shiny yellow flowers
throughout the growing season. A cold hardy Mountain cousin to annual
bedding gazanias. It does well under ordinary garden treatment or in
unamended dry soils as well. Plants are 10” across, 3” tall.
GENTIANA,
Gentian.
Shade to part sun. Washed out foliage is a sign of too much sun. Once
established, plants do not like to be moved. Gentians can tolerate sun as
well with consistent moisture.
clausa. This native brings very unusual brilliant
violet blue flowers to the woodland garden. The flowers never fully open,
but have a narrow space at the top that allows bees to work their way
inside. When the bees have pollinated the flower the tips turn from white to
purple, signaling that there is no more nectar. Easy to grow in an average
to moist shady site. 15-20” tall and wide.
cruciata 'Blue Cross.' Clusters of intense blue violet flowers
open at the nodes where spoon-shaped leaves meet at angles to form a cross,
hen the name. 10", drought resistant, sun, deer resistant.
septemfida var. ‘Lagodechiana.’ The easiest
Gentian to grow! Amazingly bright blue flowers appear in early summer.
Grows well in half shade to partial sun, however it does not like full sun.

GERANIUM,
Cranesbill/Hardy Geranium. Sun/part shade; bloom
times vary; highly valued for their summer-long blooming period and grow
well in almost any moist, well-drained soil. Larger foliage varieties need
some shade, the varieties with the finely divided foliage can usually
tolerate full sun. Distinctive dissected or lobed leaves often change color
in fall. Fruit is shaped like crane's beak or bill. Divide every 2-4
years. Excellent plants that belong in every garden.

blue pearly flowers. Very tolerant of diverse habitats, even blooming well
in your darkest corner, in dry shade. Emerald green glossy, Maple-like
