GAILLARDIA, Blanket Flower.  Sun; blooms June until a hard frost.

aristata ‘Amber Wheels. Selected for its unique blossoms; large, golden yellow flowers with fringed petals and prominent amber-red center.  They are produced on tall stems above the mounded, lance shaped leaves all summer long and into fall.  Reaches 28 - 32 inches tall. 

a. ‘Arizona Sun.’  2005 AAS Flower Winner.  Provides a continuous display of large 3” mahogany red flowers with bright yellow petal edges.  8-10” tall plants.  Oustanding!

a. ‘Bijou. Very compact grower.  Red flowers with yellow tips bloom from summer to frost and are heat tolerant.  Deer resistant.  Good cut flower.  Butterfly magnet.  10”.

a. ‘Oranges & Lemons.’  Large peachy-orange flowers with yellow tips and large central cones appear for a long time in summer.  Light blue-green foliage enhances the warm flower color.  Great upright habit.  Grows 22-26”.

 

‘Burgundy.’  3”, wine-red blooms.  Yellow button-like center turns red.  Blooms early summer to frost.  Heat tolerant and easy to grow.  Height 30”.

‘Dakota Reveille.’  A fully double Gaillardia with an exceptionally long bloom time!  Fluted red flowers with yellow tips gradually open forming a perfectly round and colorful ball. Blooms June through fall . Height 18-24”.

'Fanfare.’  From England comes one of the most talked about new plants!  Deep scarlet trumpet flowers, topped by bright yellow ends, sparkle in the garden all summer into fall.  Growing 18-24 inches it thrives in full sun and grows in a compact, attractive mound.  Remove the spent flower heads to encourage this hot color performer to keep going throughout the season.  'Fanfare' also makes for a delightful cut flower. 

‘Frenzy.’  Vibrantly colored flowers have fluted petals that bloom from early summer to early fall.  Compact, tidy appearance makes them perfect for container gardening or near the front of a boarder.  Heat and humidity tolerant. Height 18-24”.

‘Gallo Dark Bicolor.’  Large, red and golden yellow flowers with soft silver green foliage.  Compact and upright.  Blooms June through September.  Height 10-12”.

‘Gallo Peach’  Huge peach-colored flowers with yellow tips radiate from a bright yellow cone. Compact plant looks great in containers or the garden. Height 8-10” Very heat tolerant.

‘Gallo Yellow’ Same as above, but petals are bright golden yellow.

'Goblin.  12"; The classic which all other Blanket Flowers are judged.  It is covered with large showy deep red flowers with yellow margins all summer.

‘Summer’s Kiss.’  2” soft apricot flowers with deep sunny-gold centers bloom from early summer until late fall! Foliage is a pretty silver green with some creamy variegation.  Height 18”.

‘Sunburst Burgundy Silk.’ Deep burgundy red flowers with a perfect scarlet halo in the center blooms ALL SUMMER! Height 14-20”.

‘Sunburst Tangerine.’ Light lemon-yellow flowers with a small tangerine ring around the center bloom all summer. A bight sunny addition to any sun garden! Height 14-20”.

‘The Sun.’  Golden yellow daisy-like flowers.  Blooms from early summer to frost.  Continuous color in containers.  Heat tolerant and easy to grow.  Height 15”.

‘Tizzy.’ Deep russet read buds that open to flowering ranging from red to resy terra cotta. Blooms early summer to early fall. Heat and humidity tolerant. Hieght 18-24”, spread 18-24”.

‘Tokajer.’  Turn up the heat with these hot colored, summer bloomers.  Marmalade-orange daisies become darker toward the eye that is a the reddish-brown cone.   An ideal summer accent plant.  Perfect for the hot, dry spot. 

 

GALIUM, Sweet Woodruff.  Shade/partial shade; blooms May-June; excellent groundcover.

odoratum.  8-10"; fragrant white star-shaped flowers above attractive whorled green leaves. The leaves have a fragrance of newly-mown hay and are used to make May wine.  Galium is very attractive beneath shrubs or in a naturalized area.

 

GAURA, Apple Blossom Grass.  Sun; blooms June-October; drought tolerant; long flowering.

lindheimeri ‘Corrie’s Gold.’  Exciting new variety.  Creamy gold-edged foliage.  From England. 

‘Ballerina Blush.’  Delicate blush pink flowers resemble butterflies on graceful, slender stalks, all summer long.  Grows to 3 to 4 feet when in flower.  Easy to grow in full sun in well drained soil.

‘Ballerina Rose.’  Delicate, rose pink flowers on compact, upright plants.  Grows to 18 inches tall and wide.  Easy to grow in full sun in well drained soil.  Perfect for the cottage garden setting.

‘Belleza.’  Great compact habit and non-flopping pink flower spikes makes it perfect for small gardens and containers.  18” tall.

‘Blushing Butterflies.’  Soft pink flowers give the plant an overall airy texture.  Foliage has a compact habit. Height 18-24”.

‘Crimson Butterflies.’  Deep pink flowers early spring until frost.  18”.  Very compact, dark crimson foliage, stout reddish stems.  Tolerant of high humidity and drought. 

‘Passionate Blush.’  Striking variegated foliage is topped with profuse pink blooms.  16-18”.

‘Passionate Rainbow.’  A fabulous looking plant even before blooming.  New growth that is rosy returns transforms into green leaves that are neatly edged in creamy white.  An added bonus—long blooming rose-pink blossoms that form on compactly branched stems.  Grows 24-30”. 

‘Pink Fountain.’  Great compact plant with explosion of pink flowers all summer.  2’.

‘Siskiyou Pink.’  A knockout with red stems, petioles and buds.  Flowers are rich rose pink  and continue nonstop all season.  18-24”.

‘So White.’  Pure white flowers all summer.  Attractive compact habit.  30”.

‘White Heron’.  Slightly smaller dwarf form of Gaura with white flowers that look like butterflies on stiff dark stems.  Reaches 30 inches tall. Grow in full sun in well drained soil.

 

GAULTHERIA procumbens, Wintergreen, Checkerberry.  This creeping shrublet only grows to 6” in height. Foliage has a strong wintergreen scent. White flowers mature into scarlet fruit which can stay one the plant until next spring. Can take full sun if consistently moist.

 

GAZANIA, Cold Hardy Gazania.  Sun; tolerant of drought once established.

linearis ‘Colorado Gold.’  Glossy mounds of deep green, strap-shaped leaves are spangled with  shiny yellow flowers throughout the growing season.  A cold hardy Mountain cousin to annual bedding gazanias.  It does well under ordinary garden treatment or in unamended dry soils as well.  Plants are 10” across, 3” tall.

‘Tanager.’  Florescent orange daisies from earliest spring to late autumn create dazzling specimens, ideal for mass displays.  Glossy dark green leaves develop a deep purple tinge in the winter months.  May reseed.  Reaches 4 inches tall and 10 inches wide.  Grow in full sun to part shade in very well drained, dry soil.  Dislikes winter wet.

 

GENTIANA, Gentian.  Shade to part sun.  Washed out foliage is a sign of too much sun.  Once established, plants do not like to be moved.   Gentians can tolerate sun as well with consistent moisture.  

clausa.  This native brings very unusual brilliant violet blue flowers to the woodland garden. The flowers never fully open, but have a narrow space at the top that allows bees to work their way inside. When the bees have pollinated the flower the tips turn from white to purple, signaling that there is no more nectar. Easy to grow in an average to moist shady site.  15-20” tall and wide.  

septemfida var. ‘Lagodechiana.’  The easiest Gentian to grow!  Amazingly bright blue flowers appear in early summer.   Grows well in half shade to partial sun, however it does not like full sun.  8-12”.   

‘True Blue.’  Large tubular flowers open up at nodes all up and down the stems. One of the only true blue flowers! Blooms midsummer to early fall. Height 24-30”, spread 12-18”.

‘Zuki Rindo.’  Short, compact plant with purple-pink flowers.  Height 24”.

 

GERANIUM, Cranesbill/Hardy Geranium.  Sun/part shade; bloom times vary; highly valued for their summer-long blooming period and grow well in almost any moist, well-drained soil.  Larger foliage varieties need some shade, the varieties with the finely divided foliage can usually tolerate full sun.  Distinctive dissected or lobed leaves often change color in fall.  Fruit is shaped like crane's beak or bill.  Divide every 2-4 years. Excellent plants that belong in every garden.

 

cantabrigiense.  Carpeting Geraniums with aromatic, light-green deeply-divided foliage. 

‘Biokovo.’  10”; pinkish white flowers held well above the attractive dark green foliage; fall color is red; choice variety that is highly recommended; excellent groundcover for sun or shade, even dry shade under trees.

‘Biokovo Karmina. 10”; dark pink flowers held well above the attractive dark green foliage; fall color is red; choice variety that is highly recommended; excellent groundcover for sun or shade, even dry shade under trees.

‘St. Ola. Pristine white flowers sparkle on top of ornamental foliage for a long time in summer.  Excellent fall color stays with plants all winter.   Evergreen.  Easy to grow, excellent groundcover or for front of the border.  12-16” tall, 12-24” wide. 

‘Westray.’  Rich warm-pink flowers bloom for a long time over full, compact plants.  12”.

 

cinereum, Grayleaf Geranium.  Low growing species with tufted, small deeply-divided foliage.  1.5” cup-shaped flowers, with dark veins converging in the center to form an eye.

‘Alice.’  A stronger growing variety with larger pale-lilac pink flowers and silver-green foliage.

'Ballerina.’  4-6" mounds; large lilac pink flowers with a dark center and purple veins; finely cut gray-green leaves; a real beauty.  Winner of the Royal Horticultural Society Award of Merit.

 

himalayense (syn. G. grandiflorum).  Wonderful, finely cut foliage turns bright orange and red in fall.  Very large 2” blooms appear in summer.

‘Plenum’  or known as ‘Birch’s Double.’  Double violet blue flowers top 15” plants.

 

macrorrhizum, Big Root Geranium.  Fairly large, rich-green deeply divided foliage.  Excellent groundcover.  Grows well in shade, and even does well in dry shade, where little else will grow.

‘Bevans.’  Spreading mounds of  foliage makes this a good ground-cover choice.  Deep magenta blooms with contrasting red sepals appear in late spring and summer.  1’ tall and wide.

‘Espresso’ Dark bronze foliage and dusty pink flowers which fade to white. Height 16”

‘Ingwersen’s.’  Light pink flowers, grows 12-18”.

‘Variegatum.’  Foliage is variegated with random cream splashes.  Bright magenta flowers.

 

oxonianum.  Vigorous species with deeply divided foliage.  Sweet heart-shaped cupped petals.  Sun to part shade.

‘Bressingham Delight. This hybrid Geranium is a compact, clump-forming, basically stemless plant that typically grows to 16" tall and spreads to 24" wide. Soft pink flowers appear in spring and continue blooming throughout the summer into fall. Rounded, deeply lobed, dark green foliage.

 

pratense, Meadow Cranesbill.  Rather tall species with large, finely-cut leaves and large saucer shaped flowers.

‘Laura’ Very nice double white flowers blooms with a flush of new flowers in late summer. Height 24”

‘Summer Skies.’  Double violet-blue flowers with darker veins and sometimes with white centers.  24”.

 

sanguinium.  Profuse blooming plants that do well in sun or shade.  Very heat and drought tolerant.  These low, bushy perennials are very easy to grow and makes excellent groundcovers.

sanguinium, Bloody Cranesbill.  10-12"; purplish red flowers; good groundcover.

s. 'Album.’  10-12"; attractive white flowers; good groundcover.

s. ‘Elke.’  Unusual, stunning, fluorescent magenta-pink flowers with white centers and edges and deep purple veins.  Blooms for a long time in summer into fall.

s. ‘Max Frei.’  Deep red violet flowers June through Sept.; 15”.

s. ‘New Hampshire Purple.’  8-10”; everblooming attractive purple flowers; colorful fall foliage; excellent groundcover for sun or shade.

sanguinium var. striatum also know as 'Lancastriense.’  4-8"; pale pink flowers with darker veins May-October; very free-flowering.

s. ‘Vision Light Pink.’  Produces a stunning carpet of saucer shaped light pink flowers with red veins.

s. ‘Violet.’  Same as above with deep violet flowers.

 

Hybrid-Cultivars

‘Ann Folkard.’  Very unique plant with cupped rich purple-magenta flowers with black center that stand out against the gold-green, deeply divided foliage.  spreading cultivar.  20”.

‘Blue Sunrise.’  Golden yellow foliage and a long succession of large, violet-blue flowers.  Grow in full sun to part shade.  Grows 18 inches tall and wide.

‘Crystal Lake’ A long-blooming Geranium. Blooms are crystal blue with dark purple veins. Height 19”

‘Crystal Rose’ Bright, long lasting hot pink flowers bloom Spring. Great for a dry location. Height 6”
‘Double Jewel.’ 
Double white flowers with a splash of pink-purple in the center.  Long blooming, May to September.  Compact, reaching only 10 inches tall and wide.  Grow in full sun to shade. 

‘Dragon Heart.’  Standing at least 2’ tall, this monster-sized plant makes a great focal point of a garden.  Large magenta flowers with black centers are produced in great abundance for most of the summer.  Spread 18-24”.

‘Jolly Bee.’  Massive cupped blue flowers with large white centers and dark-maroon arteries.  Very floriferous, long blooming plants.

‘Johnson’s Blue’ Large, simple, pure blue flowers. Mid-green foliage deeply divided into narrow sections. An excellent and very popular cultivar. Height 18”

‘Lavender Pinwheel.’ Ruffled mauve petals with lavender swirls and remarkable edges. Semi-evergreen foliage has purple blotches. Height 28”

‘Lizabeth.’  Soft pink flowers patterned with purple veins and a center with a light green eye. Flowers appear similar to cinereum species but have notched petals.  Trouble free plant that blooms all summer.  Height 6”.

‘Orkney Cherry.’  A new bronze foliage Geranium with bright pink flowers continuously from June-Sept.  10”.  Sun to part shade.

‘Perfect Storm.’  A storm of small, magenta pink blossoms with a black center and black veins are produced atop low, spreading mounds of velvety grey-green foliage in summer.  Reaches 12in tall and wide.  Blooms late spring through early summer.

‘Pink Penny’ Large 2 1/2” purple-pink flowers with dark veins bloom all summer. Vigorous grower forming broad, spreading mounds. Very floriferous. Height 15”.

‘Rozanne.’  It's the Geranium of the Millennium according famed plantsman Adrian Bloom!
Its large single violet-blue flowers with white centers, appear from June until the first frosts. A combination of a long flowering period and vigorous yet compact habit makes Geranium x 'Rozanne' especially versatile for growing in borders, patio containers or even hanging baskets growing to a height of 16” and 24” wide.

‘Sandrine’ Large deep-purple flowers with black centers. New foliage emerges bright yellow-green making a string contrast behind the flowers. Height 30”

‘Shocking Blue.’  An improved ‘Johnson’s Blue’ and some say even better than ‘Rozanne’.  Bright blue flowers with darker veins and white center appear spring through fall.  12”.

‘Starman. A unique color pattern for a hardy geranium; purplish pink flowers with fuchsia veining and marking sin the center of the flower.  Provides a bright splash of color all summer.  Reaches 12in tall and wide.  Blooms early to late summer.

‘Stephanie.’  Pale violet flowers with dark purple veins cover mounds of foliage.  Extremely floriferous.  A cross of G. pelopponesiacum x G. renardii.

‘Summer Skies.’  Absolutely gorgeous double soft violet flowers with light centers are held high above the dark green foliage.   22”.

‘Sweet Heidi.’  Brilliant tricolor blossoms with blue-purple petals that have a pink ring surrounding the white eye, are perpetually produced all summer.  Sprawling habit.  Grows to 12”.

‘Tiny Monster.’  Purple-violet flowers bloom in summer.  Attractive mounded foliage. Quickly spreading habit.  Great groundcover. Height 10-12”.

‘Westray’ Bright pink flowers bloom in profusion over spicy red stems. Semi-evergreen foliage. Height 1-12”

 

GEUM, Avens.  Sun/partial shade; blooms late spring to early summer.

flora plena ‘Blazing Sunset.’  Fully double, scarlet red flowers up to 50% larger than other varieties are produced all summer long.  Lovely in borders, cottage gardens and in fresh bouquets.  Grows 24”.

‘Double Bloody Mary.’  Clusters of large, double burgundy red flowers in summer.  18”.

‘Eos’ This unique gold-foliaged Geum creates a stunning display even before the dark burnt orange flowers are in bloom. Height 14”

‘Flames of Passion’ Upward-facing, semi-double, red flowers are long blooming. Height 20”

 ‘Totally Tangerine’ Extra large, warm yellow-orange flowers bloom over an extended period– from May until August. Does best in moist, well-drained soil. Height 30”.

 

GLOBULARIA cordifolia, Leather Leaf Powder Puff.  Cherished for its tight, 1”-tall blue-green carpet of evergreen leaves and its hundreds of  fluffy light blue powder-puff flowers in late spring.   Perfect for edging pathways and in between stepping stones.   Easy to grow and very tolerant of dry conditions.  Native to southern Europe.   Gows 4” tall and 15” wide. 

 

GYPSOPHILA, Baby's Breath.  Sun; blooms in summer; excellent cut and dried flower; cut back spent blooms to encourage more flowers.

paniculata 'Flamingo’ Clouds of large double pale pink flowers. Drought tolerant. Makes a great cut flowers. Height 13-17”

p. ‘Pink Fairy.’  18"; clear, light pink double flowers; long blooming.

p.‘Vietties Dwarf.  Long blooming white flowers; only 15” tall.

repens 'Alba.’  4-12"; white flowers from late spring to frost; finest trailing plant for rock garden.
