UVULARIA, Bellwort:  sun; may go dormant in summer.

sessifolia, Little Merrybells, Wild Oats:  dainty 1" yellow bells on 6-10" native in spring.

VERBASCUM, Mullein:  sun/partial shade; blooms late spring through Oct.; reseeds readily; cottage garden favorite.  Easy to grow, but good drainage is a must.

‘Jackie’:  numerous short stems and delicious buff-peach flowers with a purple eye.  Flowering starts in spring and lasts for ages because of its sterility.  A new variety out of New Zealand, it is a cross between V. phoeniceum and V. dumulosum.  23”.

VERBENA, Wild Verbena, Vervain.  Summer blooming perennials for sun. 

bipinnitifida.  Great Plains native with purple umbells all summer.  Spreading ferny foliage.  6-12”.

‘Valley Lavender Plains Verbena’. Blooms May to October with vibrant, lavender clusters of flowers. This plant is attractive to butterflies and grows as a ground-cover approximately 3 to 6 inches high and 12 to 18 inches wide. Valley Lavender does best in full sun.

canadensis.  Bright lavender flowers; hardy native groundcover.

canadensis ‘Miss Anne’.    A vigorous strain with masses of sparkling white flowers all summer.  Excellent groundcover for sunny, well drained site.

hastata, Blue Vervain:  A Missouri native which grows in wet meadows, wet river bottomlands, stream banks, and fields.  It is a tough, clump-forming perennial with a stiff, upright habit which typically grows 2-4' tall.   Candelabra-like spikes (2-6" long) of tiny, tubular, purplish-blue flowers appear over a long July-September bloom period.

VERONICA, Speedwell:  sun/partial shade; blooms throughout summer; good cut flower.

longifolia ‘Blue John’:  Dark blue flowers.  20”

pectinata ‘Rosea’:  rose pink flower spikes are 2-4” long.  railing stems form a dense prostrate mat.  Grows naturally in dry shady areas.  3-6”.  Excellent ground cover, great for walkways.

peduncularis ‘Georgia Blue’:  new and rare semi-prostrate Veronica; reddish-green foliage in spring fades to dark green; 4-6”; tolerant of partial shade.  Profuse blue flowers.  Evergreen.

prostrate ‘Goldwell’.  This little beauty bears blue-purple flower spikes over carpets of narrow green leaves elegantly edged in gold.  4”.

prostrata ‘Trehan Gold’.  Short, deep blue flower spikes over low-growing golden yellow foliage that spreads slowly.  6-8”.

repens aurea ‘Sunshine’:  small lavender flowers in spring with bright chartreuse foliage.  Excellent mat forming groundcover.  Ooh!  2”.

s. ‘Baby Doll’.  Many pink flowers over 8” plants. 

s. ‘High Five’.  Excellent variety with extremely long blue flowers.  Grows to 36”.

spicata ‘Blue Indigo’:  Long blooming spikes of small flowers that appear in summer. 'Blue Indigo' has deep blue flowers and dark green foliage.  20”.

s. Blue Carpet’.  Bright blue flower spikes are produced over a long period on low growing, spreading mats of foliage.  Grows 6” tall.  Deer resistant.

spicata 'Icicle':  18-20"; pure white flowers all summer.

spicata ‘Tickled Pink’:  Spikes of pink flowers in summer top glossy green foliage.  10-24”.

‘Darwin’s Blue’.  Dense dark blue purple spikes all summer over dwarf, 12-16” clumps.  Improved and heat tolerant version of ‘Sunny Border Blue’. 

‘Eveline’.  A very floriferous, beautifully colored Veronica with spikes of rich rose-purple flowers over slightly darker foliage and stems than usual.  22” .  Very rich coloring for a Veronica.

'Goodness Grows':  12"; violet-blue flowers bloom from April until frost; dwarf, bushy habit; good groundcover.  One of our favorite perennials.

‘New Century’.  An excellent new ground cover with thick, mat-forming foliage that is deep emerald green and evergreen.  Covers itself in small blue flowers in late spring and early summer.  Grows 2” tall.

‘Reavis Crystal Blue River’.  Shimmering blue flowers totally blanket plants from spring into early summer, then sporadically until frost.  Excellent low growing groundcover. 

‘Royal Candles’:  Rich violet blue flowers are abundantly produced all summer atop clean, deep green foliage.  Bottom foliage does not die out like other Veronicas.  Attractive compact, upright habit.  Great for front of the border, edging, mixed containers, rock gardens or en masse. 

'Ulster’s Dwarf Blue’:  Long blooming, dwarf with abundant azure-blue flower spikes June to Sept.  Only grows 8”.

‘Waterperry’:  4”; beautiful mat of shiny green, heart shaped leaves; bluish-purple flowers; excellent groundcover.

VINCA, Periwinkle, Trailing Myrtle:  sun or shade; evergreen trailing groundcover.

minor:  violet blue flowers; trailing evergreen that forms a dense groundcover.

minor ‘Illumination’:  This new vinca radiates a stunning effect with its gold center and dark green border, virtually illuminating the landscape.  Blue flowers appear in spring. 

m. ‘Wo-Jo’s Jem’:  spectacular new variety with vivid creamy to bright yellow leaf centers, dark green leaf edges.

VIOLA, Violet:  partial shade; fragrant blooms in spring.  Does best in moist, woodland soil.

cornuta ‘Black Magic’, Horned Violet:  black blooms with yellow eyes.  Long flowering.  8-10”.

koreana ‘Dancing Geisha’:  dwarf violet form Korea with showy metallic flecked leaves fantastically silvered and swirled and cut, this viola takes highest honors in the foliage arena; delicate large blue or white flowers are produced in early spring, but the leaves alone are simply splendid; delicious fragrance.

koreana ‘Syletta’:  4” dark leaves with silver veins.  Violet flowers.

labradorica:  6”; blue flowers throughout the entire growing season; ornamental bronze foliage; will take full sun.

pedata, Bird Foot Violet:  6-8”; showy light violet-blue flowers in spring and early summer; native; distinctive “bird-foot” shaped leaves; has been considered the most beautiful violet in the world.

‘Clarkson’.  A natural hybrid of pedatifida x sorrowi found in a prairie near Clarkson, Nebraska.  Expresses classic heterosis in its large toothed leaves and huge violet-blue flowers.

‘Columbine’.  Very pale lilac, almost white flowers are streaked with lavender.

‘Etain’:  Rare and choice!  This beautiful English hybrid has extra large 1 3/4” pale lemon blooms with contrasting lavender margins.  Very irresistible and fragrant too.  This delightful gem will flower from May-Oct.

‘Rebecca’ :  Whirls and swirls of sweetly scented flowers are creamy white with flecks of deep violet around the edges.  No two are exactly alike!  ‘Rebecca’ belongs to a group called ‘Violettas’ which sports not only a compact habit but also a delightful vanilla fragrance.  This delightful gem will flower from May through October.
