PAPAVER, Oriental Poppy: sun; blooms late spring to early summer. Plants go dormant after flowering and reappear in fall. PEROVSKIA, Russian Sage: sun. This 3-5’ plant has ornamental silvery foliage that provides a stunning backdrop in the garden. Unbeatable for mass display, as a specimen and for cutting. Easy to grow in full sun. Drought tolerant. atriplicifolia: 2-4'; blue flowers spikes; gray-green fragrant foliage; drought tolerant. Perennial Plant Association Plant of the Year for 1995. Designated a Missouri Botanical Garden ‘Plant of Merit’ for it’s outstanding qualities. ‘Filigran’: 2-4’; finely textured foliage; blue flower spikes. ‘Little Spire’: This is a wonderful new dwarf. Lavender-blue flowers. Very similar to the species, but is much shorter. Only 25”. ‘Longin’: same as above only more upright.
PERSICARIA: sun or shade. amplexicaulis ‘Golden Arrow’. Narrow spikes of bright cardinal-red flowers above golden lance-shaped 18-24” foliage. Wonderful to bring brightness and light into the shade garden. ‘Red Dragon’: Spring foliage is a deep burgundy color with a plum or mint colored chevron. Color can vary with temperatures and can be in shades of red, mint, silver and burgundy. Foliage is set off very attractively with its red stems. The foliage can become more green toward summer. Clump forming. Adaptable to a side range of soils. Small white flower clusters in late summer and fall. 24”. Sun or shade.
PETASITES, Butterbur: sun to shade; does well in poor soil. Often used for naturalizing large areas under trees, along moist stream banks or permanently moist sites such as bogs or swamps. This plant spreads rapidly and can be controlled by placing in tubs. japonicus ‘Variegatus’: Big is beautiful! Mammoth, bold rounded yellow splashed dark green leaves. Short thick spikes bear white flowers late winter to early spring, often before leaves emerge. Thrives in moist even swampy sites. In small gardens it can be restricted by planting in sunken tubs. Sun to part shade. 36”. palmatus ‘Golden Palms’: Shimmering metallic golden “palms” 1’ wide arise in early spring preceded by pinkish male flower spikes in Feb.-April. A wonderful spreading plant that likes it wet. Needs a shot of sun for best color.
PHLOX divaricata, Wild Sweet William: partial shade to shade. Excellent plants for early spring color for the shade border, wildflower garden or woodland. Reseeds nicely. ‘Blue Moon’. Loads of fragrant dark blue flowers in spring. 12”. ‘Laphamii’: Fragrant blue flowers on compact plants. 8-10”. ‘Montrose Tricolor’: A new woodland phlox with smokey blue-lavender flowers and unusual variegated foliage in pink, white and green. Fragrant blooms with dark eyes and sky-blue petals. Easy in shaded locations. Shade to part shade. 8”. ‘Plum Perfect’. Deliciously fragrant deep purple flowers with dark eyes appear in spring on vigorous plants. ‘White Perfume’: 8”; very fragrant pure white flowers.
PHLOX maculata, Wild Sweet William. Hybrids resulting from a cross with P. carolina, somewhat mildew resistant. Flowers earlier than the paniculata hybrids, with longer, narrower racemes. ‘Flower Power’. An exciting addition to the palette of tall Phlox varieties. Luscious wants of creamy white florets, flecked with sweet pink, appear in summer. Shorter, sturdier, earlier and more mildew-resistant than most P. paniculata types. 42”.
PHLOX nivalis ‘Eco Flirtie Eyes’, Trailing Phlox. Very rare Phlox with light lavender flowers with purple eyes in spring. Low growing to 10”. Full sun to part shade.
PHLOX paniculata, Tall Garden Phlox: sun; fragrant, showy blooms in summer. The "backbone" of the perennial border. Thinning of stems for better air circulation prevents mildew. Cut back after flowering for rebloom. ‘All-in-One’. Lilac blooms with white edges begin in June and continue into Sept. 24”. ‘Baby Face’. Huge heads of clear pink blossoms with hot pink eyes top, compact 18” plants. Mildew resistant. ‘Becky Towe’. Great mildew resistance, rich lavender blooms on 4’ stately stems. ‘Eva Cullum’: 3’; large heads of clear pink flowers with a red eye. ‘Flame’. Named a Missouri Botanical Gardens Plant of Merit for its outstanding qualities. Huge, deep pink flower heads continue on and on from mid summer through Oct. Very disease resistant. Grows 4’. ‘Swirly Burly’. Huge flower clusters of soft lilac petals with dark violet eyes top 28” plants. ‘Tracy's Treasure'. Excellent new mildew resistant phlox with baby pink flowers over soft green foliage. Robust, upright habit. ‘Volcano’. An outstanding group with masses of large, fragrant flowers that cover 30” plants in summer. Have been bred for exceptional mildew resistance, and profuse, colorful flowers. ‘Wendy House’. Deep, dark purple flowers that don’t fade. Good mildew resistance. 20”.
PHLOX, Creeping Phlox: blooms in spring; good groundcover. subulata: 4-6"; sun; many colors available including red, pink, lilac, and white; excellent evergreen groundcover; drought tolerant. subulata 'Candystripe': 4-6"; very colorful two-tone flowers of white and pink; sun. PHLOX x. ‘Minnie Pearl’. Explodes into bloom in early summer, long before the paniculatas, and is covered with pristine white flowers. Glossy green foliage topped with large pure white flowers. Amazingly early flowering period, no mildew, and a spreading habit. Not just any white phlox. Grows 12-14”. A natural hybrid between P maculata and P. glaberimma.
PHYSALIS, Chinese Lantern. Sun to part shade. alkekengi. A vigorous, spreading perennial notable for its ornamental, paper red calyces containing red seeds. Seed pods can be used in fresh or dried arrangements. 24-30”.
PHYSOSTEGIA, False Dragonhead/Obedience Plant: sun/partial shade; blooms August-September. virginiana ‘Miss Manners’: pure white snapdragon like flowers from June to September. Deep green, glossy foliage. 18”. Well behaved, non spreading habit. It is a clumping form, with excellent secondary branching. Destined to be a new standard. virginiana 'Variegated': 24"; dense spikes of deep pink flowers; variegated foliage; good cut flower. virginiana 'Vivid': 18-24"; bright pink spikes; good cut flower.
PIMPINELLA major ‘Rosea’, Pink Queen Anne’s Lace. A pink Queen Anne’s Lace but no weedy seedlings. A clumping perennial with 3’ stems topped with lacy soft pink flowers in summer. Prefers good drainange and a sunny spot. Rare and limited.
PINELLIA, Dragon Tails. Cousins of Jack-in-the-Pulpit, Arisaema and other Arums. Shade to part shade. tripartite, Variegated Green Dragon. Fabulous gold splashed foliage gives rise to fragrant white to green “Jack-in-the-pulpit” type flowers. Exciting and exotic leaves. Prefers fertile, humus-rich, well-drained soil in a woodland garden or as a specimen in a container. 12”.
PLATYCODON, Balloon Flower: sun/part shade; blooms summer. One of the last to emerge in spring. Balloon-shaped buds pop open to star-shaped flowers; excellent cut flower. grandiflorus apoyama albus ‘Fairy Snow’: A delightful 10” plant with delicate blue veined white flowers. g. ‘Double White’: Double white flowers. 20”. g. ‘Fuji Blue’. Blue flowers on 20” plants. g. ‘Fuji Pink’ also known as ‘Shell Pink’: 24”; soft shell pink; tolerates partial shade. g. ‘Hakone Double Blue’. Double deep blue flowers pop out of balloon-shaped buds. 24”. g. ‘Miss Tilly’. Beautiful shades of blue flowers top compact, bushy plants all summer. Grows 8-9”. ‘Astra Double Blue’. Exceptional branching and thick blue double flowers. Compact and uniform habit. 8”. ‘Astra Pink’. Excellent new variety with long lasting thick pink blooms. 8”. ‘Sentimental Blue’: 6”; 3” single blue blooms all summer
PODOPHYLLUM, May Apple: shade/partial shade; blooms spring; dormant in summer. peltatum: 18"; creamy, nodding flowers, red fruit; one great lobed leaf; native.
POLEMONIUM, Jacob's Ladder: partial shade; blooms spring; good cut flower; ornamental foliage. boreale ‘Heavenly Habit’: Large blue flowers with yellow halo and white eye. Glossy leaves Excellent compact habit. 12”. b. ‘Iceberg Point’. Pretty blue flowers with lavender purple ring and bright white eye. Compact 4-12” plants with silvery green leaves. caeruleum: 18”; wildflower with attractive pinnate foliage and sky blue flowers in late spring and early summer. c. ‘Apricot Delight’: Apricot flowers with a tinge of lilac bloom profusely for a long time in spring and early summer, often covering entire plant. 15-20”. c. ’Snow and Sapphires’: Green leaves with clear white margins, sky-blue fragrant flowers. More heat tolerant than other variegated Polemoniums. Large fragrant sky-blue flowers are far superior and larger than other variegated varieties. 18-24”. reptans. ‘Stairway to Heaven’. A colorful plant sporting green leaves with white leaf margins that are tinged pink. Like other Polemoniums, but about three times larger in all respects. Pale lavender 3/4” bell-shaped flowers with white stamens are produced from late spring through early summer. 1-2’. ‘Bressingham Purple’: A purple-leaved Jacob's ladder cultivar was discovered by plantsman Adrian Bloom growing among a batch of several hundred plants. Bloom says Polemonium 'Bressingham Purple' has burnished, dark-purple pinnate leaves and light, violet-blue flowers. It grows 28” tall and prefers full sunshine - shade will cause the leaf color to fade.
POLYGONATUM, Solomon's Seal: shade/partial shade. Prefers moist, woodland-type soil. Works well among trees and shrubs. Graceful, arching stems add an elegant element to the shade gardens. Excellent woodland plants whose vertical stems contrast well against the rounded shapes of Hosta and ferns. Dangling flowers are followed by showy blue-black berries in fall. Fabulous in flower arrangements. commutatum, Great Solomon’s Seal. A gem for the shade garden with 5-7’ tall arching stems and 3/4” greenish bells. biflorum: 3-6'; greenish-white flowers are followed by blue-black berries; excellent large plant for the woodland or shade garden; native woodland wildflower. falcatum ‘Variegatum’: graceful, unbranched red stems neatly arranged with alternate oval, green leaves with white edges on one side, and clusters of small, pendulous, tubular white flowers on the other. humile, Dwarf Solomon’s Seal: white tipped with green bell shaped flowers on attractive miniature foliage. 6-8”. Rare. hirtum. This wide leaved selection has green glossy foliage and white bell shaped flowers on plants 10-15” tall. multiflorum. Vigorous 2’ arching stems with clusters of white bell shaped flowers. multiflorum ‘Variegatum’: variegated leaves with dark and pale green streaks, and narrow white margins. Small tubular white flowers. x hybridum ‘Striatum’. Graceful arching stems with dark-green leaves attractively marked with white and pale-green streaks. Small clusters of little tubular white flowers hang off one side of the stems, later replaced by dark-blue berries. 22”.
POTENTILLA, Cinquefoil: sun/part shade; blooms in spring; evergreen. Clump forming perennials that spreads with trailing stems. Good evergreen groundcover. crantzii 'Vera Nana': 3"; bright green mounds covered with gold flowers; good as a groundcover or for rock gardens. nepalensis ‘Miss Willmott’. Long time favorite that makes an excellent groundcover. Bright carmine-red flowers over a long season on 12” plants. n. ‘Ron McBeth’: Carmine-pink flowers with centers appear all summer. 12-24” clumps with strawberry-like foliage. Sun.
PRUNELLA, Self-Heal: Shimmering lilac flowers cover 1’ plants. Spreads rapidly. Sun to light shade.
PULMONARIA, Lungwort/Bethlehem Sage: shade/partial shade; blooms in spring; showy white marbled foliage; clumping plants; tolerates a dry shady spot; excellent accent plants. Deer and slugs dislike this spring bloomer. longifolia 'Betram Anderson': 12"; blue flowers, narrow spotted foliage; good groundcover. l. cevennensis: heavily spotted narrow foliage. Leaves can grow up to 2’long!. 12” tall. Dark blue flowers in spring. A new variety out of Cevennes, a French territory. l. ‘Coral Springs’. Clusters of coral pink flowers appear before the dark green leaves speckled with silver. l. ‘Diana Clare’. Violet blue flowers over large silver-sheened apple green leaves that are wider than other longifolias. Vigorous, multi-crowned 12” tall plants with long lasting foliage. DO NOT cut back after flowering! l. 'Roy Davidson': 8-10"; pink flowers turning blue as they mature; longer narrower spotted leaves; excellent plant that does well in dry shade. s. ‘High Contrast’. Large pink and
blue flowers appear in early spring. Luscious dark green foliage has
strong silver highlights. Grows to 9”. ‘Milky Way’. This plant offers the stellar combination of lance-shaped, heavily spotted leaves and pink-wide blooms that fade to blue. Grows 15”. ‘Raspberry Splash’. Tons of dusky raspberry-coral flowers arrive in spring to herald the strongly silver-marked, sharply pointed foliage.
‘PULSATILLA, Pasque Flower: sun to part shade. vulgaris ‘Papageno: lovely, fringed, semi-double bell-shaped flowers of mixed colors about 2-3” wide appear in early spring. Tiny ornamental fernlike leaves follow the flowers. The booms are replaced by seeds in the form of interesting globular masses of silvery down. 1`2”.
