HOSTA, Plaintain Lily/Funkia:  shade/partial shade; bloom times vary.  Excellent perennials for shade that require minimal  care.  Lovely massed in woodland settings or used as specimens.  Wonderful groundcovers.  Some do tolerate full sun, but those with variegated leaves do best in shade.

 

HOSTA SMALL - 6-12”

 

‘Abby’.  Leaves are blue-green with lime to gold edge.  Light lavender flowers bloom in summer.  This sport of Gold Drop is a rapid grower and forms a dense 8 inches tall by 18 inches wide.

 

'Allen P. McConnell':  small; lavender flowers; vigorous compact grower with dark green oval leaves with a fine white margin; good for edging.  Grows 13” high (in bloom) and wide.

 

‘Blonde Elf’.  Excellent mini gold with wavy margins.  8” racemes of lavender flowers in summer.  Tiny plant grows 6-9” wide.

 

‘Blue Mouse Ears’ 2008 HOSTA OF THE YEAR   Small, round, blue, distinctive heart-shaped, thick leaves with tiny white edges, form a tight,  compact mound.  Pale lavender flowers on short 6 to 9 inch scapes bloom in mid summer.  Compact reaching only 6 to 7 inches tall and spreading 12 inches wide.  Slug resistant..

 

‘Cherry Berry’.  Lance-like leaves have white centers and dark green margins that jet frequently into the clear white.  The leaf petioles and scapes show a clear reddish color.  Cherry colored seed pods in fall.  Grows 10 inches tall and wide.  Lavender flowers in July and August.  Grow in full to part shade in moist, well drained soil.

 

‘Cracker Crumbs’Swirling clumps of pointed gold leaves edged in green.  Small; 5 inches tall and wide.

 

‘Diamond Tiara’:  Creamy, white-margined form of ‘Golden Tiara’ with leaves that are 5” long and 4” wide.  Flowers are deep purple and white veins.  Good grower.  14-18” tall, spreads 20-36”.

 

‘Emerald Tiara’.  Forms neat mounds of low, growing, gold centered, green-margined foliage.  Pale lilac flowers appear on 24” scapes. 

 

‘First Mate’. A tetraploid sport of ‘Kabitan’ with improved vigor, more pronounced variegation, and a more upright habit.  Long, narrow leaves have dark green, heavily ripples margins and a gold center that lightens to cream.  Lavender flowers bloom in mid to late summer on 24 inch scapes.  Small, reaching only 10 inches tall.

‘Ginko Craig’:  small, short lance-like green leaves with sharp white border; excellent small Hosta.  Grows 12” high by 33” wide.

 

‘Gold Edger’.  Forms a dense mound of golden foliage, reaching 8” tall and wide.  Great edging plant for the shady border.  Pale lavender flowers reach 14” tall.  Grow in full to part shade.

 

‘Golden Tiara’:  medium to small Hosta; light heart-shaped leaves with a distinct golden border, white and purple streaked flowers.  Awarded the Nancy Minks Award by the American Hosta Society for outstanding small-leafed cultivar.

 

‘Green Mouse Ears’.  Thick substance, round green leaves remind one of little mousse ears.  Small; 6 inches tall and wide.

 

‘Ground Master’.  Contrasting dark green leaves with wavy white margins.  Deep purple flowers.  12 inches tall and 15 inches wide.

 

helonioides f. albopicta.  A choice groundcover with lance-shaped leaves that have a distinct creamy margin.  Huge flower scapes reach 4’ tall with mauve colored flowers streaked with purple.  Foliage grows 12-14 inches tall and wide.

 

longipes.  Light golden, lance shaped leaves with red leaf petioles.  Lavender flowers bloom in early August.  Small to medium sized.

 

‘Rainforest Sunrise’.  An exciting plant with radiant gold leaves with dramatic dark green borders.  Leaves are thick and glossy, holding up well as season.  Slug resistant.  Light lavender flowers are produced on tall 18 scapes in midsummer.

 

‘Shade Parade’Delightful heart-shaped round leaves with a white margin.  Small; 3 inches tall and wide.  Grow in full to part shade.

 

‘Show Boat’.  Broad, elongated dark foliage with a wide creamy white margin.  The edges of each leaf turns up a bit.  Fragrant lavender flowers.  Grows to 12 inches high and 30 inches wide.  Grow in full to part shade.

 

‘Sitting Pretty’.  A miniature, spreading hosta with lance shaped, creamy-yellow leaves with a two-toned green edge.  Funnel shaped lavender flowers bloom on 12 inch scapes in the midseason.  Leaves range in shape from round to lance shapes, and colors can be yellow to green to blue, often with white or yellow or green margins.  Grows 4 inches wide and 8 inches wide. 

 

‘Twilight Time’.  Dense mounds of rippled blue, arrow-shaped leaves.  Small; 10 inches tall and wide.

 

‘Yellow Splash’.  Forms a neat mound of attractive green hear-shaped leaves splashed and streaked with creamy yellow.  Lavender flowers bloom in midsummer on tall stalks.  Grows 12 inches tall and 24 inches wide.  Grow in full to part shade in moist, well drained soil.

 

 

HOSTA MEDIUM – 12-24”

 

Albiqua Drinking Gourd’.   Round cardboard-like, deeply cupped, powder-blue leaves.  Grows 16 inches tall and 2 feet wide.  White flowers in early summer.

 

‘Ann Kulpa’Striking variegation with wide dark green margins and celadon green jetting into the narrow yellow enter that brightens to ivory.  Moderately corrugated leaves on ivory petioles with green stripes grow to 20 inches tall.  Pale lavender flowers bloom on ivory scapes to 28 inches in mid summer. 

 

‘Antioch’Middle green leaves with irregular white margination are held erect.  Foliage grows to 18 inches tall and 20 inches wide.  Lavender flowers bloom in June on 36 scapes.  Grow in full to part shade.

 

‘Blue Cadet’:  medium to 16”; blue-green heart-shaped leaves forming dense mounds; lavender blooms in late summer; nice for small gardens and edging.

 

‘Bright Lights’.  Heavily puckered leaves emerge with dark gold centers, and are accentuated with dark blue edges.  Foliage grows to 15 inches tall.  Short stalks of white flowers in early summer.

‘Brother Stephan’.  A favorite of hosta enthusiasts.  Forms a large 20 inch tall clump of thick, heavily corrugated, puckered leaves.  Spring leaves are chartreuse with a blue margin.  Mature leaves are gold with a green margin.  Near white flowers bloom on 24in scapes in late spring, early summer.

 

‘Christmas Candy’.  A strikingly variegated, medium-sized Hosta, who's lance-shaped apple-green leaves are plashed with a bright white centre. Grows very well for a white leaved variety. Soft-lavender flowers.  Mutant of ‘Night Before Christmas’.

 

‘Clovelly’.  Easily identified at a single glance.  Green leaves with prominent deep piecrust edges are of good substance and are held horizontally.  Mature leaves show some pebbling or dimpling.  Clump will grow 18 inches tall.  Pale lavender flowers bloom on 24 inch scapes in mid summer.

 

‘Crowned Imperial’:  gray-green leaves with a creamy white edge are 9” long and 6” wide.  A vigorous grower and relatively sun tolerant.  Lavender flowers.  15” tall, 22” wide.

 

‘Fire and Ice’:  pure white leaves with very dark green margins.  Heavy leaf substance.  Lavender flowers are produced on white flower stems.  Medium to 24” wide.  A spectacular sport of H. ‘Patriot’. 

 

fortunei 'Aureo-Marginata':  dark green leaves with a stunning golden-yellow border; lilac flowers.

 

fortunei 'Francee':  medium to large; dark green rounded leaves with distinct thin white edges; lavender flowers.  Variegation holds up well in full sun providing superb color contrast.  Winner of the American Hosta Society Eunice Fisher Award.

 

‘Fried Green Tomatoes’.  Rich green heart shaped leaves make a broad mound to 26”.  Fragrant white flowers with a lavender blush appear on 40” scapes.

 

‘Hanky Panky’.  Unlike any other Hosta you’ve ever seen.  A natural sport of ‘striptease’, it emerges in spring with dark green leaves with a pale lime green center.  An ivory halo separates the center from the margin.  The center transforms to a creamy yellow, with the margin turning to near white.  Lavender flowers top the vigorous grower in midsummer.

 

‘Independence’.  Dark green leaves with creamy-white margins speckled with green.  Speckling intensifies as the season progresses.  Lavender flowers.  Sport of ‘Revolution’.

 

‘Iona’.  Glaucous grey green leaves with an irregular white edge which results in grey streaking.  Lavender flowers.  Grows 20 inches tall and 28 inches wide.

 

‘Ivory Coast’.  A smaller sport of ‘Sagae,’ reaching only 20in tall, with broader, rippled leaf margins.  Spring leaves are grey-green with yellow margins.  Mature leaves have ivory margins, and grey-green jetting towards the blue-green center.  Lavender blue flowers bloom on 35 inch scapes in early summer.

 

‘Jack of Diamonds’.  A sieboldiana hybrid.  Blue green, corrugated leaves with an irregular, yellow margin for a dense mound reaching 16 inches tall.  Best color is achieved in high filtered shade.  White, bell-shaped flowers are produced on dense racemes reaching 18 tall.

 

‘Julie Morss’.  Yellow leaves with blue-green margins.  Center of  leaf is all green by mid-summer, glaucous on underside of leaves.  Lavender flowers bloom in July and August on 18 inch scapes.  Grows to 21 inches tall and 44 inches wide.  Grow in full to part shade.

 

longipes.  Light golden, lance shaped leaves with red leaf petioles.  Lavender flowers bloom in early August.  Small to medium sized.

 

‘Lonesome Dove’Medium sized hosta to 17 inches with small, thick, cupped leaves and an upright mounded habit.  Blue-green margin, creamy white center, and green jetting between the two.  Lavender flower reach 24 inches in mid summer.

 

‘Loyalist’:  the show-stopping reverse variegation of the famous Hosta ‘Patriot’.  This plant has much heavier leaves, probably the result of being a tetraploid.  The leaf margin is deep green and the leaf center is  nearly pure white, and is not prone to melting out.  The flowers are lavender on cream-white stems in mid summer.  One of the best white centered Hosta to arrive on the gardening scene in over 25 years.

 

‘Midwest Magic’.  Puckered yellow centered leaves are outlined in irregular green.   Light reflecting off the dimpled foliage creates the illusion of iridescent leaves.  Grows to 22”.

 

‘Minuteman’:  thick, slightly-cupped heart-shaped leaves with flame-shaped dark-green centers and creamy white borders.  Leaves have some puckering.  Better than average sun tolerance.  Pale lavender-striped flowers on 24” scapes.  Large, broad-spreading Hosta.

 

‘On Stage’:  yellow leaves with dark green margin.  Medium to large Hosta.  The two-tones margin streaks to the center.  Lavender flowers.  Grows 24” tall and 14” wide.

 

'Patriot':  medium; an outstanding new Hosta!  Heart shaped leaves have dark green center with crisp 1" wide white margin; sport of  'Francee'.  Rapidly forms neat, pest resistant clumps.  Named Hosta of the Year for 1997.

 

‘Queen Josephine’.  Wonderful glossy, heart-shaped dark green leaves have creamy yellow margin.  Grows 24” wide.  Purple flowers.

 

‘Remember Me’:  A large bright creamy center that is framed by a blue-green margin.  Attractive heart-shaped leaves measure 6” long and 4” wide.  It reaches a height of about 12” with a 20” spread.

 

Revolution’:  Medium.  Dark green foliage with cream center.  Center area has speckling which is soft green in the springtime and darkens by summer.  Heavy substance, possibly a tetraploid.  A revolution on hosta color patterns.

 

‘Risky Business’.  A white-centered form of Strip-tease, gorgeous deep green leaves with perfect white center bands, incredibly uniform variegation adds to the excitement of this plant, vigorous and quick to establish, lavender flowers bloom mid-summer.  Medium sized; 20 to 24 inches.

 

‘Shade Fanfare’.  Heart-shaped, bright green leaves with broad, creamy yellow margins. Leaves are 7" long and 5 1/2" wide. Will take a fair amount of sun. Produces an abundance of lilac flowers in midsummer.

‘Sharmon’.  Stunning two-toned leaves are lightly curled with creamy yellow centers and green edges.  Grows 18-24”.

 

‘Show Boat’.  Broad, elongated dark foliage with a wide creamy white margin.  The edges of each leaf turns up a bit.  Fragrant lavender flowers.  Grows to 12 inches high and 30 inches wide.  Grow in full to part shade.

 

‘So Sweet’:  Shiny deep green leaves with creamy yellow margins changing to white.  Excellent grower.  Very fragrant white flowers appear in August, and match the attractive white variegation.  1996 Hosta of the Year.

 

‘St. Elmo’s Fire’Golden yellow leaves emerge in spring with white margins.  Showy red petioles provide for a spectacular show.  Older leaves turn to green providing great contrast with the younger leaves.  Grow in full to part shade.

 

‘Striptease’:  medium; a unique ‘Gold Standard’ mutation with a light yellowish center and very wide dark green edge.  Named for the mysterious thin white strip that dances between the yellowish green center and the dark green margin.

 

tardiana 'Halcyon':  medium; powdery blue green leaves that contrast nicely against green or gold foliage plants.  Excellent variety that makes an impressive mound.  Will tolerate full sun; lavender flowers; thick leaves that slugs can’t get through.  Designated a Missouri Botanical Garden ‘Plant of Merit’ for it’s outstanding qualities.

 

t. ‘High Society’.  A classy sport of ‘June’.  Emerges with a narrow, yellow center and wide, blue margins.  Center widens and brightens to white by midsummer.  Pale lavender flowers.   8x12”.

 

t. ‘June’:  a beautiful new introduction that is a sport of the blue H. Halcyon.  Creamy centered foliage with blue edges; the center gradually changes to dark chartreuse.  Unlike many light centered Hosta, the foliage on this plant has great substance; appreciates some morning sun for best color; 15x12”; violet flowers.  2001 Hosta of the Year.

 

t. ‘June Fever’.  Its ‘June’ with a coat of varnish.  Uniquely shiny chartruese leaves with narrow blue-green edges.  Lavender flowers.  Sport of H. ‘June’.

 

‘Tattoo’:  ‘Tattoo’ is beyond a double, one of the most spectacular hostas ever introduced!  This revolutionary plant displays bright gold leaves, each tattooed with a green outline of a maple leaf in the center.  The clump is topped by lavender flowers in early summer.

 

‘Touch of Class’.  Fabulous new hosta, the tetraploid of ‘June’, emerges in spring with intense blue leaves with a gold flame in the leaf center.  A green pattern occurs where the gold and blue overlap.  Incredible thick substance.  Lavender flowers.

 

tokudama ‘Aureonebulosa’.  Heavily textured leaves are streaked with yellow and have a blue-green margin.  White flowers appear in early summer.  Grows 14” wide.

 

‘Twilight’: this spellbinding Hosta has foliage that emerges light green with a yellow margin, but then changes into dark green and the yellow margin fades into pure white during the season.  The leaves are heart-shaped and are somewhat wavy.  Grows 30” tall and 20” wide.   Medium to large Hosta.  Considered by all to be one of the best new introductions.

 

'Wide Brim'medium; dark green leaves with very wide cream borders; vigorous grower; excellent for use in floral arrangements; lavender flowers.  One of the finest white edged Hostas.

 

‘Winfield Blue’:  Medium.  Considered by many to be the best blue-leafed cultivar.  Powdery purplish-blue color that holds well into late summer.  Good, thick substance.  Bluish lavender flowers in late summer.

 

HOSTA LARGE – 24-36”

 

‘August Moon’:  Large, rounded, seer-suckered, golden leaves that stay attractive all summer.  White flowers with a touch of pale lavender in late July-mid-August.  Award winner.

 

‘Barbara Ann’Large blue/green leaves with wide white edges.  Spectacular sport of Hosta sieboldiana Elegans.  Flowers area almost  pure white.  Grows to 30 inches tall and wide.

 

‘Blue Angel’:  Cupped, heavily textured blue leaves grow 16” long and 13” wide with time.  One of the most vigorous growing large blue hostas.  White, hyacinthlike flowers in midsummer.  36” tall, spreads 48”.

 

‘Big Daddy’:  Huge, round, puckered leaves are deep blue.  White flowers on 36” stems.  Good back of the border specimen.  Spreads 3’.

 

‘Blue Umbrellas’:  IMMENSE shiny blue-green leaves.  With its rapid growth rate and huge size it will quickly become a giant.  Lavender flowers in summer.

 

‘Carnival’.  Irregular creamy yellow margins on green heart-shaped leaves.  Lavender flowers.  Lavender flowers bloom in summer on 30 inch scapes.  Grows 16 to 18 inches tall and 40 inches wide.  Grow in full to part shade in moist, well drained soil.

 

‘Climax’.  Thick, puckered green leaves with broad gold margins form a large, vase shaped mound.  Light lavender flowers.  The large, to 4’ across plant makes a dramatic impact in the garden. 

 

‘Daybreak’:  excellent large bright yellow.  TOLERATES FULL SUN!  If planted in full sun, color becomes incredibly bright.  Foliage is shiny and thick of texture.  Blue flowers in late summer.

 

‘Dancing In The Rain’.  A sport of 'Blue Umbrellas.' The pristine white center is surrounded by bluish-green borders.  Leaves have a thick substance. Pale lavender flowers.  Can grow to 32”. 

 

‘Dream Queen’.  An improved ‘Great Expectations’.  Bolder variegations, puckered heart-shaped leaves have wider blue-green margins and creamy yellow centers.  Excellent substance, faster grower with more sun tolerance.  White flowers. 

 

‘Eskimo Pie’.  A real beauty with large cream-chartreuse leaves edged in irregular blue green with apple green steaks.  Leaves are round and puckered.  Centers lighten to bright white.  Creamy white flowers. Grows 3’ wide. 

 

'Gold Standard':  medium large; light green leaves with a green border in spring, as season progresses, the light green color turns to a creamy yellow; lavender flowers; morning sun brings out golden color.   Winner of the American Hosta society Eunice Fisher Award and Minnesota Gold Award.  An outstanding variety that is highly recommended.

 

‘Great Expectations’:  beautiful large round puckered leaves with wide, irregular margins of blue and light green surrounds cream leaf centers; white flowers.  Incredible specimen plant!

 

‘Guacamole’:  Large, shiny, rounded green leaves with a gold center.  Colors will intensify with more light.  Large fragrant lavender flowers in late July and Aug.  Very rapid grower  Excellent landscape plant.  Good sun tolerance.  Flowers up to 24”.  Large, to 36” wide. Named The 2002 Hosta of the Year for its outstanding qualities.

 

‘Krossa Regal’:  foliage is frosty blue.  Upright leaves.  Up to 40” with flower scapes up to 5’.  Lavender flowers.  Award winner.

 

‘Lakeside Cha Cha’.  Leaves start apple-green then transform to glowing yellow.  The large wavy leaves wiggle in the wind, as if they were dancing.  Plants stay pristine all summer.   Slugs can’t bite through the thick leaves, and gold color stays strong through all the heat. 

 

‘Liberty’:  A sensational new hosta!  A sport of the beloved ‘Sagae’, it features a wider, more dramatic border.  A possible polyploid with thicker leaves than ‘Sagae’.   The yellow margins fade to creamy-white later in the season.  Lavender flowers top the clump in early summer.

 

‘Love Pat’:  large; very blue hosta with quilted, cupped leaves; pale lavender flowers; excellent   specimen plant; slug resistant.   Spectacular!

 

‘Magic Fire’.  Distinctive flame-patterned green leaf centers with large bright gold yellow margins distinguish this variety.  Plant has a magnificent presence in the shade garden.  Pale lavender flowers.  Grows 22” wide.

 

‘Mildred Seaver’.  Deep green leaves with a white edge create an impressive mound.  Pale lavender flowers.

 

‘Night Before Christmas’.  Large, pointed dark green leaves have narrow white centers.  Thick leaves are slightly wavy Grows 36” wide.  Lavender flowers.

 

‘Olive Bailey Langdon’.  An improved ‘Frances Williams’ with better color and less prone to burning.  Massive, thick, rounded leaves with powder blue centers and wide irregular gold margins make a stunning presence in the garden. 

 

‘Orange Marmalade’.  Leaves first emerge near orange with tangerine accents, and dark green margins.  Centers transform to lemon yellow and gradually fade to pure white by end of summer.  The edge remains dark green and provides a nice contrast throughout the season.  Pale lavender flowers top 28” tall scapes.

 

‘Pardigm’.  Voted 2007 Hosta of the Year by the American Hosta Growers AssociationExceptional favorite with thick gold leaves with jetting blue-green margins.  Variegation intensifies as the leaves mature.  Light lavender flowers.   Grows 24” wide.

 

‘Paul’s Glory’:  sensational 10” leaves!  Dark green margin surrounding the center which changes from chartreuse in spring to creamy white by mid-summer.  Pale lavender flowers open on scapes reaching 35” high mid-July to August.  Grows 25” high by 55” wide.  Named 1999 Hosta of the Year for its vivid foliage colors, good substance, and attractive mound habit.  Spectacular specimen plant in the landscape.

‘Polar Moon’.  Golden yellow heart shaped leaves have margins of dark and light green.  Pale lavender flowers.  Grows 30” wide.

 

Sagae’ (formerly H. fluctuans ‘Variegated’):  30” high by 70” wide.  Leaves grow over 1 foot long, have gold margins that change to creamy white by mid-summer.  Margins stay gold in deeper shade.  Lavender flowers up to 4’ high in mid-July and August.  Vase-shaped; good slug resistance; excellent background specimen or groundcover plant.  Winner of numerous awards.  Named 2000 Hosta of the Year

 

‘Satisfaction’.  Large, deep green leaves of good substance display prominent bright yellow, 2” wavy margins.  The heart shaped leaves form a wide, low mound.  Near-white flowers sit just above the foliage.  Grows 28” tall, 38-50” wide.

 

sieboldiana 'Bressingham Blue':  medium to large; wide heavily textured cup-shaped blue- green leaves; pearly-white flowers; one of the best blue Hostas.

 

sieboldiana ‘Christmas Tree’:  one of the best cream edged sieboldiana types with very dark green heavily corrugated rounded leaves; a distinctive creamy border makes this a winner.  The 2’ wide clump of perfect proportions is topped with light lavender flowers on very leafy flower stalks only just above the foliage that grows around 20” tall.

 

sieboldiana 'Elegans':  very large; 4-5' wide plant with heavily textured, steel blue-green, rounded leaves; white flowers on compact scapes; color is best in shade to light sun.

 

sieboldiana 'Frances Williams':  medium-large; handsome, blue-green leaves with wide golden yellow border; white flowers.   Winner of the American Hosta Society Alex J. Summers Distinguished Merit Award.  Makes an impressive specimen.  Considered by all to be one of the finest Hosta available.

to a medium gold by summer.  Heavy substance.  Near white flowers.  Can grow to 50” wide. 

 

‘Stained Glass’.  It is hard to believe that there can be any Hosta better than ‘Guacamole’, The 2002 Hosta of the year, but here it is!  It is a far superior form.  It has brilliant, shiny gold foliage that is surrounded by a 2” dark green margin.  Fragrant, light lavender flowers appear in summer.  It is very sun tolerant.  This dazzling giant grows 48” around.  Named the 2006 Hosta of the Year for its outstanding qualities.  

 

'Sum and Substance':  very large; huge, glossy, tough textured gold leaves that make an impact in any garden; light lavender flowers;  pest-resistant.  Winner of the American Hosta Society 1984 Midwest Gold Award, 1984 Eunice Fisher award and the 1987 President's Exhibitor Trophy Award.  Deer resistant.

 

‘Sum of All’. Quite possibly the largest hosta available today.  Each leaf reaches 16 inches across and have a whole 1 inch margin of golden yellow laid on rippled kelly-green leaves.  Grows 3 feet tall and 5 feet wide in three to five years.  Grow in moist soil in full to part shade.  Slug resistant foliage.

 

‘Summer Breeze’.  Dark green, puckered leaves have wide chartreuse to yellow margins.  Pale lavender flowers.

 

‘Sun Dance’:  Variegation is creamy white in sun, but creamy yellow to gold in dense shade.  Performs well in full sun.  20” tall, 36” wide.

 

‘Titanic’.  The name says it all.  It’s a mammoth.  This colossal new gold edged cultivar is a variegated sport of Sum and Substance.  Fantastically ribbed foliage has a bright yellow margin.  Light lavender flowers shoot up 40”.  Its about as big as they come!

‘T-Rex’.  A gargantuan-sized Hosta!  Gigantic, blue-green puckered leaves measure 18” long x 14” wide.  Large near white flowers are produced in early summer.  Foliage grows 30” tall and 80” wide.
