Coral Bell

HYBRIDS of the American native Coral Bell, Heuchera villosa, are transforming shade gardens across the Midwest.  These delights look great in our sweltering summers, and even thrive, producing huge, intense-colored leaves on robust mounds.  Their powerful coloration brings excitement to the shade garden.  For a stunning combination mix the ebony of ‘Blackout’ with the bright yellow ‘Citronelle.’  All are topped with wands of white flowers in summer. Outstanding selections include:

‘Beaujolais’ has huge, burgundy leaves with a touch of silvering and deeper purple veins. It is incredibly vigorous and is a relatively huge variety.

‘Blackout’ is one of the very darkest garden plants with near-jet black, very glossy leaves with perfectly rounded lobes. They form a tight, compact mound, making this an ideal plant for containers, edging, or rock gardens.

‘Citronelle’ illuminates even the  darkest shade garden with bright, citron yellow leaves with lightly silvered undersides.  In heavy shade, the leaves are more chartreuse in color. From the famed Thierry Delabroye of France.

‘Caramel’ is fast becoming the most beloved of all the Coral Bells.  Striking mounds of golden-orange foliage with red undersides demand all eyes.

‘Pistache’ is a robust cultivar with large, light lime green to chartreuse-yellow leaves. The color is a perfect foil for blue Hostas or purple-leaved Coral Bells.

‘Tiramisu’ is perhaps the showiest cultivar in our new group of villosa hybrids.  New leaves are yellow with a heavy smattering of red pigmentation in the veins and toward the center of the leaf. As they mature, they turn chartreuse with a light silver overlay. This plant has a fantastic compact habit, so it looks great in containers or as edging. It’s absolutely unique!
