FOR COLOR in late summer that continues well in to fall try:

 

 

'Indian Summer' Black Eyed Susan, Rudbeckia -- 1995 All American Selection Winner as the largest-flowered gloriosa daisy can grow; enormous 6-9” flower heads on sturdy 3-3 ˝’ pants; will reseed. Designated Missouri Botanical Garden ‘Plant of Merit’ for its outstanding qualities.

Perennial Hibiscus 'Pinot Noir' -- Big 9 to 10 inch robust red blooms bloom in late summer.  This cultivar was selected because of its proliferation of blooms.  Grows to 30 inches tall and wide.

 

 

 

'Prairie Sun' Black Eyed Susan, Rudbeckia -- Award winner.  Striking 5” light green-eyed flowers whose golden yellow petals are tipped primrose yellow.  3’. 

 

 

 

 

Blue Mist Shrub, Caryopteris -- Deer proof plants for full sun. Late blooms extend the season in August and September. Drought tolerant and easy to grow. Cut to ground in spring.  2-3’ tall and wide with masses of dark blue flowers in late summer; darkest blue flowers of any cultivar; attractive gray green foliage.

 

 

'Honorine Jobert' Anemone -- 36"; white flowers with showy yellow stamen, good cut. Designated a Missouri Botanical Garden’s Plant of Merit for it’s outstanding qualities.

 

 

 

 

'Party Dress' Anemone -- Big fluffy double pink flowers, bigger than most.  36”.  

 

 

 

 

'Purple Dome' Aster -- Dark purple flowers cover plant in early fall; mildew resistant; forms attractive mound.

 

'Autumn Colors' Black Eyed Susan, Rudbeckia -- Beautiful, new, bi-colored! Black Eyed Susans bear 5", single flowers on 2’ tall plants. Glorious shades of red, gold, orange & rust combine to make different combinations in each plant. Easy, great cut flower & attracts butterflies. Rich soil is best.

Crapemyrtle, Lagerstroemia -- all colors, shapes and sizes.  From dwarf, 12" shrubs to 15'+ trees.  Colors range from pure white to pink to fire engine red.  Drought-tolerant once established.  Great fall color.  Blooms from July through September -- a great performer in St. Louis' heat.

 

 

 

 

Beautyberry, Callicarpa -- All bloom on current year's wood.  Full sun to part shade.  Deer resistant.  Use twigs of berries for indoor fall decoration.  Handsome bronze-purple new growth and dark green foliage give way to violet fruit clusters in fall.  Reaches 4-10' tall and wide.
