Botanical name: Deutzia 'Chardonnay Pearls'

Common name: Deutzia

Size: 2'-3' tall and wide

Items of interest: Chardonnay Pearls has limey-green foliage with pearl-like flower buds in the spring that open with white, frothy petals.  Makes a nice show in the shade or part-sun.

Botanical name: Azalea 'Girard Rose'

Common name: Evergreen azalea

Size: 2.5' tall and wide

Items of interest: A wonderful evergreen shrub that blooms brilliantly in the spring. Prefers an acidic soil rich with organic material, so plant with lots of peat moss and compost. A Missouri Botanical Garden Plant of Merit.

We also like the Girard azaleas 'Christine,' 'Renee Michelle,' 'Crimson,' and 'Fuchsia.'

Botanical name: Azalea 'Cannon's Double'

Common name: Deciduous azalea

Size: A mature specimen will be 6' tall, 4' wide

Items of interest: The deciduous azaleas are lovely paired with evergreen azaleas or boxwood.  Prefers an acidic soil rich with organic material, so plant with lots of peat moss and compost.

We also like the deciduous Azalea 'Sunset Pink.'

Botanical name: Itea virginica 'Henry's Garnet'

Common name: Virginia sweetspire

Size: 4' tall and wide

Items of interest: The Iteas do a nice job of performing three seasons out of the  year -- fragrant, showy blooms in spring, nice green foliage in summer, and knock-out fall color.  They also do well with lots of moisture, so if you have a wet, shady spot, this might be the answer.  A Missouri Botanical Garden Plant of Merit.

For a shorter shrub, consider Itea 'Little Henry.'

Botanical name:
Kalmia latifolia 'Tiddlywinks'

Common name: Mountain laurel

Size: 2' tall and wide

Items of interest: If you have a shady, woodsy area, consider adding mountain laurel.  This evergreen shrub boasts glossy green leaves and the most spectacular show of flowers in the spring on any plant anywhere.  Like azaleas, it prefers an acidic soil rich with organic material, so plant with lots of peat moss and compost.

'Tiddlywinks' is small in stature.  For something a little larger, try Kalmia 'Olympic Fire,' which grows 3'-4' tall and wide.

Botanical name: Pieris 'Forest Flame'

Common name: Lily of the Valley Bush

Size: 4'-7' tall and wide

Items of interest: This dynamic specimen makes a tall shrub or short tree and provides vivid interest in the spring garden with its white flowers and fire-engine red foliage. Like azaleas, it prefers an acidic soil rich with organic material, so plant with lots of peat moss and compost.  For best performance, site it in an area that gets some protection from winter winds.

Botanical name:
Kerria japonica 'Pleniflora'

Common name: Japanese rose

Size: 5'-10' tall and wide

Items of interest: Kerria is a great performer, kicking off spring with a big flush of bright yellow flowers, then blooming sporadically for the rest of the growing season.  You can cut it back hard if it needs tidying up, and it will rebound well.  Makes a nice hedge.
